Inventory Sub-Committee Final Report
The Regional Inventory Sub-Committee met on April 1, June 3, and August 5, 2006 to
formulate a suggested plan of action for the Region following the Regional Inventory.
Several ideas were shared at the inventory and in the sub-committee meetings that
followed.
Topics covered at the inventory were:
• apathy in service
• communication between service bodies (ie: groups, areas, region)
• being diverted from our primary purpose due to money, property, and prestige
• using group autonomy to negatively affect other groups or NA as a whole
• no credibility in our region due to a lack of services
• non-discrimination (ie: reacial, language, cultural barriers, geographical) we are related
by our disease
• inability to be a resource to areas, groups
• outside issues affecting the clarity of the NA message
• VRC: does it carry our primary purpose or divert us?
• lack of unity
Several addicts from several areas participated in this process and this is hopefully a
review of the suggestions we came up with and would like to see implemented if the
members and groups of the region are in agreement. We discussed how we could establish
more effective communications especially when working at the regional level. Moving the
regional meeting would provide opportunity for regional committee members to participate
in area learning days and workshops geared toward the specific concerns of an area.
RCM's would have the responsibility to generate enthusiasm and find out if their area has a
desire and willingness to host the regional meeting.
Sponsorship and mentorship also play an important role in effective communication.
Mentorship allows us to learn from those before us. If we have an alternate teach them. We
as an NA community should take responsibility for ourselves. Our regional sub-committees
are gearing up and are a resource to the individual areas. Regional Outreach is reaching
out into counties that don't have groups. At the time of this meeting the regional web-site
was being built; it is now up and running. The web address is: http://natennessee.org/. Feel
free to check it out and make suggestions for improvement, it is a work in progress.
Having area subcommittee chairs come to the regional subcommittee meetings would
enhance the communication between the areas and region. We would be able to
coordinate presentations, learning days, workshops, etc., so that we would not be
duplicating efforts and more members could get involved. A revision of the VRC guidelines
to include a Board of Directors that would consist of members with VRC experience to
oversee and OK final decisions in the VRC committee. Changing seed money to make VRC
happen and have monies from fundraisers go directly to the Regional Service Committee.
Preplan convention to see if it is feasible.
Some of the outside issues affecting our fellowship were discussed. One was outside
literature either being read or sold at an NA meeting. We as members need to have
knowledge of approved literature and uphold the traditions no matter what. It was
suggested that each person should go back and start a tradition study meeting in their
area.
Drug courts sending people to our meetings is affecting our fellowship. Groups reported
having four members with 25--30 drug court attendees. We have to keep the meeting
recovery oriented. Public information subcommittees need to make presentations to court
officials and let them know what we can and cannot do. Areas should get their services up
and running. If no area PI, Regional PI is available to help, with getting area committee
together and doing presentations as needed.
Any time there is deviation from the six points of an NA group (A Guide to Local Service
page, 25), we are affecting NA as a whole. The six points embody the spirit of the
traditions. "The Twelve Traditions of N.A. are not negotiable. They are the guidelines that
keep our fellowship alive and free." (Basic Text page 58). Since the Regional Inventory was
held, area inventories are being done and literature is being stressed. Lead by example;
teach and share from the literature. Stand on the traditions. One member present stated
there is a traditions meeting being started in his area. The Regional Outreach sub-
committee is available to help with workshops on trusted servant position, tradition or
concept workshops.
Information is not getting back to home group members. It was stressed that warm body
syndrome has got to end. We bear responsibility for those we put into service positions.
We should expect them to be accountable to us.
We really want to stress the fact that the Regional Service Committee and the Sub-
committees are here to help and support the areas of the Volunteer Region. What does
your area need?
Steady, progressive, forward moving changes are what we need. We need to be practical
and not overload.
